Ford announced today that they are recalling all 34,000ish 2008 Super Dutys with the 6.4, because of a fuel leak that causes fuel to ignite in one of the after treatment something or others, resulting in a flame coming out of the tail pipe! Supposedly it only happens when the vehicle is performing its regeneration stuff in the cat or where ever it happens. So far there are three confirmed cases of this happening.

That would be crazy to be motoring down the road and look at the side mirror and see flames coming out the tailpipe!

outstanding! looks like the 6.4 is already trying to live up to the name the 6.0 made!

It's just the particulate trap.... Emissions garbage, you gotta love it

I'd like to see that too, just looked, 69 TSB's and recalls so far for the 6.4.... doesn't look too sparkely..... not to mention the bad publicity from a recall this soon after a new engine is released....

Not really sure. I just read that the ones that were shooting flames had injector troubles.

I talked to the fleet manager for the company that I work for, and he was told by a Ford rep that the cause of the tail pipe BBQ is a stuck injector. It allows raw fuel to enter the exhaust system and pool in the particulate filter where it is ignited during the regen process.

The Rep said that there doesnt seem to be one cylinder that is more prone then any of the others to have this problem, and the cure is simple, new set of injectors.

At about $500 Per injector, not counting labor. Man I wish Ford and Navstar could get one right out of the box.

I know the Warranty will cover it, but injector jobs get expensive cutting into Ford's profit putting them in to further troubles. $$$

Who makes the new injectors? I thought that I heard Delphi was the mfr., so does Ford recoup warranty costs from Delphi or does the pissin match over warranty claims get worse with International?

I don't know if we missed this or not.  This was back in 2013 that they built engine number 2,000,000 for Dodge Ram PickUps.  It is a video that follows the engine through it's assembly.  I think it is pretty cool to watch!
