TrUck hard to start...

Recommended Posts

Lately my truck has been havin a major issue starting. It will start but the rpms will show 0 on the tach, after a second or so it will die again, then it will take alot of cranking to start it. This has been getting increasingly worse.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Well, since it is under the IDI section, I would assume that is the engine that you have.

1. Good fuel, fuel filter etc.

2. Good Batteries, connections, cables, etc. This one is huge! We fought our 7.3IDI at work for a long time. Changed the shut off solenoid, etc. Found out that at less than 10 volts while cranking does not fire the solenoide properly. Replaced the batteries and voila..problem solved.

3. Check electrical connections at IP to make sure they are clean and tight.

4. Possible injector/IP issue. Replaced both on another 7.3IDI and the trucks starts, idles, and runs 100 times better than it ever did.

No check engine light. The truck doesnt have much issue starting when its really hot out... Its only when its sat for a while in semicold weather that it has trouble. Why would temperature matter?

Temp will effect battery cranking amps and glow plug operation... A combo of weak batteries and cold weather can cause a no-start condition.
