Bypass type filters have been used for over 40 years by the automotive industry as a standard method of oil filtration and have proven themselves effective in extending the useful life of oil and reducing engine wear. The Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is a bypass type filter which has been used for over 40 years and has proven itself the most efficient filter of its type in extending the useful life of oil and reducing engine wear.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Filter Media

The basic difference between the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter and most other bypass filters is the method used for oil distribution within the filter and the media used to filter the oil.

Other bypass filter manufacturers currently use such materials as cotton waste, sisal waste, excelsior or chopped newspaper with sawdust. These materials are suitable for use as filter media and are so recognized by the automotive industry.

The Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter uses a roll of highly refined uniform and clean Toilet Tissue (TP) as its filtering media. This is not only a practical and economical filter media, but has proven superior to the other common filter media in removing contamination from lubricating oil.

Media Migration

The design of the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter assures against media migration. Tissue could only gain access to the lube oil system by passing through a fine 18 mesh screen and then through the 1/16" restrictor 0rifice built into the filter base. The use of a tightly compressed role of tissue (which is strengthened by oil) rather than a loose waste material, adds further assurance against migration of the filter media.

Most engines, when disassembled for repairs, will have an accumulation of solid contamination on the 0il pump suction screen, consisting of carbon particles, metal particles and varnish as well as what often appears to be fibrous particles. This occurs on engines which have been operated either with or without filters.

When lint-like materials are found, there are several possible sources. Some lint can enter the engine through the air cleaner, some by way of mechanics wiping rags and some from gaskets which might be manufactured from plant fibers. The lube oil filter is in many cases blamed as the culprit; however, experience has shown otherwise.

Additive Removal

The Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter or any filter which uses a filter media other than fullers’ earth or diatomaceous materials will not remove additives from the oil. The expressions "additives are removed" or "additives are used up" correctly applied, refers specifically to the fact that additives have reached the limit to the amount of contaminants that they can hold in suspension. The greater the quantity of contamination filtered from the oil, the less the amount of additives are needed and the longer the oil can be safely used.

Once the detergent attaches to a dirt particle, it is used up. It is in the engine's best interest that this dirt be removed rather than be allowed to circulate in the engine and cause wear. The efficiency of the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter in removing contaminants from the lubricating oil frees the major volume of the additives to continue their protective function. On the basis of laboratory analysis, the addition of a quart of new oil every 2,000 miles, plus the normal top-off oil required more than maintains additives at a safe level.

What about Oil Pressure?

The flow rate of the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is primarily controlled by a restricting orifice located at the "inlet" opening in the filter base "or supply line to Filter". This orifice is the standard size for bypass filters as required by Federal Specifications F-F 351a, and is the size used by most oil filter manufacturers in their bypass filters for automotive engines.

The lubricating oil pump, in any engine, has the capacity to produce many times the volume of oil required by the oil system of the engine. Most of the oil volume produced is bypassed by means of an oil pump regulator valve and dumped directly back into the crankcase. The very small amount of oil diverted by the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is supplied from the excess oil produced by the pump.

When properly installed on a normally functioning engine, the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter cannot lower the oil pressure or "starve" an engine of oil to the extent as to cause damage.

A "Barometer" for Preventive Maintenance

Due to the unique filter media and construction of The Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter, it is one of the greatest indicators of engine malfunctions.

"Reading" the used tissue element and making a visual comparison with the Instant Engine Analysis chart provides an early detection of engine malfunction when abnormal deposits are seen. Such early detection of engine trouble can prevent more extensive damage and save you costly repair bills.

THE PRODUCT IN QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q. What is a bypass filter?

A. A bypass filter is a device for removing solid contamination from lubricating oil. This type of filter is capable of removing extremely small size particles from the oil by providing filtration in depth through a densely packed filtering media. Oil flow through the bypass type filter is controlled at a rate so deliberate that it can trap and remove from the oil the extremely sma11 solid particles. This type of filter does not have a bypass valve built in. This means that when the filtering element is plugged up, the oil flow is stopped.

Q. Why is the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter better than other bypass filters?

A. The Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is better because it is more efficient. Its tissue element provides a greater depth of filtering media through which the oil must pass (4 1/2" of depth filtration) thus permitting it to remove more contaminants and solid particles of a much smaller size than the conventional bypass filter. In addition, it will remove up to 6 ounces of water from the oil.

Q. Just how efficient is the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter?

A. On the basis of laboratory reports which have been received from independent oil testing facilities, the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is the most efficient oil filter that is commercially available for automotive engines today. Even after many thousands of miles of use, oil filtered through a Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter will be free of contamination to such a degree that it is considered analytically clean and suitable for further use.

Q. What is a full-flow filter?

A. A full-flow filter is a device for filtering, removing solid contamination from lubricating oil. In principle, full-flow filtration can be without a doubt the ultimate in oil filtration in that all oil flowing directly to the bearings must first pass through the full-flow filter. However, in actual practice, because of the cost and size limitations, the full-flow filter is no more than a coarse strainer and must be built to guarantee against restricting the oil supply to the engine. The demands of the engine require that bypass valves be built into the system to insure an oil supply to the bearings when the filter will not handle the required volume. These bypass valves bleed at 3p.s.i. and open wide at 9p.s.i. differential pressure across the filter. These pressures may be frequently exceeded on starting the engine and also during normal operation when the filter becomes restricted with contamination. When this occurs, unfiltered dirty oil bypasses the filter and flows directly to the bearings. Despite its practical limitations of keeping the oil clean, it does provide the bearings with some protection by removing particles larger than 80 microns in size.

Q. Will a full-flow filter or a bypass filter provide the best protection for an engine?

A. The best filter protection that can be economically provided for an engine today is a combination or dual filtering system of a small full-flow filter and a bypass filter.

Q. Is there any way that I can visually distinguish a bypass filter from a full-flow filter?

A. Generally on automobile engines, a bypass filter is connected independently to an engine with external lines. The full-flow filter is normally attached directly to the engine block without external lines. Occasionally a full-flow filter may be installed with external oil lines; however, these lines will be large in diameter (approximately the size of a garden hose).

Q. Will the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter lower engine oil pressures?

A. No. The engine oil pump will produce many times the volume required by the engine and the by-pass filter. Most of the oil pumped is excess and returns directly to the crankcase through the oil pressure regulator valve.

Q. Will the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter solve the problem of fuel dilution?

A. Fuel dilution of lube oil is a problem that no filter can solve. Fuel dilution is not a problem in a properly adjusted engine, as the fuel is evaporated from a hot engine crankcase at a rate which is dependent on the engine temperature reached and the time maintained relative to the number of starts made or the amount of raw fuel added by an engine malfunction.

Q. Will the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter remove acid from the oil?

A. The Frantz Oil Cleaner will not remove acid from the oil. It will prevent the formation of corrosive acid by removing the water from oil. Without water, corrosive acids cannot be formed. Numerous laboratory analyses have shown no acidity content in oil filtered through the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter even after many thousands of miles of use.

Note: K Acidity (Modification of A.S.T.M. method D974-55T.) See Nov. 1957 edition of American Society for Testing Materials, page 434, i.e., no general relationship between bearing corrosion and acid numbers is known. Naphtholbenzein green-blue indicator is used instead of pink phenolphthalein, to detect the total acidity of both weak and strong acids. The values of acidity tests are doubtful.

FACTS ABOUT THE FRANTZ OIL CLEANER/FILTER

Cleaning Capacity

Each single unit will clean up to 8 quarts of lubricating oil. Two single Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filters may be installed in a "parallel" sequence to provide sufficient cleaning capability for those engines with a crankcase capacity exceeding 8 quarts and up to 16 quarts.

Operating Pressures

(a) Minimum: 20p.s.i. (pounds per square inch)

(B) Maximum: 70p.s.i. (pounds per square inch)

Flow Rate

The normal rate of flow of 30 weight oil at a temperature of 180 degrees and 30p.s.i. is approximately 1 quart per minute. This flow rate will vary depending on oil viscosity temperature and oil pressure.

Filtering Efficiency

(a) Solid particle removed: 1/10 micron (.000039")

(B) Water removal and retention: Up to 6 ounces.

Pressure Line

The oil line supplied for use with the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is a "lock-on" type fabric reinforced neoprene line for use with lubricating oil and fuel. This oil line is rated at 200p.s.i. constant work pressure at 300 degrees and a guaranteed minimum burst pressure of 800p.s.i.

Oil Line Fittings

The "push-on" barbed type fittings, when properly inserted into the oil line, provide a perfect oil seal. The oil line would burst before these fittings would fail.

Base Gasket

The base seal, or gasket, is made from the finest quality material available. It will give many months of trouble free service under normal conditions. Each time the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter cylinder is removed for servicing; the base gasket should be wiped clean and inspected. Eventually, the gasket will harden and develop a groove from the edge of the cylinder, which will lead to oil leakage. Gaskets should be replaced at least once a year to assure reliable service. With the purchase of every new complete Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter, two extra base gaskets are provided.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON PRODUCT FACTS

Q. Why are clamps needed in addition to the push-on hose fittings?

A. Although push-on hose fittings were originally designed to form a perfect seal, it has been determined that the additional use of the Oetiker clamps provides prolonged safety and security of the hose connections. (This is highly recommended by the current manufacturer, for long term use and satisfaction similar to Automobile manufacturer procedures).

Q. Does the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter fuel line wear out?

A. The oil line used with the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is the best quality fuel line obtainable for its purpose. It will give years of satisfactory service with little or no maintenance; however, like any rubber-like material, it can become weathered over a period of years. When the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is transferred to a new car, we recommend that the hose be replaced as a safety precaution.

Note: When oil line shows any indication of deterioration (hardening or cracking) it should be replaced.

Q. What is the effective life of the Base Tetra Seal?

A. Gaskets of ALL materials have a limited life. The standard practice in the filter industry is to replace the gasket each time the filter is removed whether or not it is deteriorated or damaged.

Rubber-like gasket materials take a permanent set under compression, particularly under elevated temperatures which tend to speed age hardening. As far as we know, the gasket material that will overcome these problems has not yet been invented. These are plain "gasket facts", and we must live with them.

Our Base Tetra Seal gasket can be successfully reused if it is turned each time the tissue element is changed. For best results, it should be rolled 90 degrees so that the top surface becomes the outer diameter. As long as the gasket remains soft and pliable this system will work. A good practice would be to change the gasket on every (4th) filter change.

Thoroughly clean the gasket and groove when reusing or installing a new gasket. Dirt is frequently the cause of leakage.

Q. Is the Steel Locking Clamp safe?

A. Yes. This "over the center" locking clamp is one of the most positive pressure clamps available. Tests that were first conducted by the Engineering Department of the previous manufacturer in Stockton, California, revealed that this locking clamp firmly held the cylinder kit to the oil cleaner base at pressures above 400p.s.i. Needless to say, this oil pressure far exceeds of any normal oil pressures which would be encountered in actual use.

Note: The Model C, 2nd edition, manufactured in Stockton, California (1976-1988) and the newly manufactured Model 2000, currently manufactured by We Filter It!, a Division of George Walker Enterprises, uses an “over the center” clamp with a “T” bolt and black knob for better stability. (This change took place due to some instability reported of the “D clip” holding the clamp latch down on early model Frantz filters). This new type clamp is required on many aircraft engine low and high pressure oil fittings and other engine parts including fuel and oil pump assemblies.

Q. Can the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter be used to clean lubricating oil on marine engines?

A. Yes. The Frantz Marine Unit is recommended for this type of installation. With the Model 2000, the canisters are made of solid stainless steel and the aluminum bases are “powder coated” to resist corrosion and rust.

Q. What happens if the tissue element is not serviced for an indefinite period?

A. The tissue element will become clogged with solid contamination and shut off the flow of oil through the Frantz Oil Cleaner. The oil in the crankcase would not be cleaned.

Why your car's engine needs clean oil all the time.

In order to understand why contaminants can harm your engine, you should know the principal functions of oil and why it is so important to keep your oil clean.

THE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF OIL

1. OIL SEALS

Oil creates the seal between the moving piston rings and the cylinder walls, and between the valve stems and the valve guides. This sealing action keeps the oil out of the combustion chamber and the products of combustion out of the oil. The better the seal, the more power is transmitted to your crankshaft, and the greater the engine's efficiency.

2. OIL COOLS

Temperatures in the combustion chamber range between 2,000°F and 3,000°F. Water in the engine block carries away much of this heat, but if it were not for the oil which cools the cylinder walls and the pistons, your engine would run red hot, and ultimately not function at all. In addition to cooling the cylinders and pistons, it carries heat away from bearings, valves, and other moving parts of the engine.

3. OIL CLEANS

One of oil’s most basic functions is to keep your engine clean. Carbon deposits are constantly being formed on cylinder walls (this build-up can be much more rapid in improperly tuned or poorly functioning engines). The piston rings, which move on a thin film of oil, tend to remove these deposits in a squeegee-like action just as a wiper blade removes the accumulated road grime from your windshield when it rains. These carbon deposits that are removed fall right back into the oil pan.

When you want to wash clothes, you don't use dirty water . . . likewise, you shouldn't use dirty oil to clean the carbon from cylinder walls. Clean oil will remove dirt better than dirty oil . . . its plain common sense.

4. OIL LUBRICATES

Maintaining proper lubrication is important for the efficient operation of an internal combustion engine. Oil as a lubricant decreases the power required to overcome friction and reduces wear between rubbing and bearing surfaces. Proper lubrication results in increased power and longer engine life. In theory, if oil were kept 100% clean, and if adequate oil pressure were maintained at all times, there would always be a thin film of oil between bearings and journals; and with no contaminants present, there would be nothing to cause wear.

Of all the physical and chemical properties that oil may have, it is generally agreed that the characteristic called viscosity is the most important. All other things being equal, it is the viscosity that determines the friction loss, heat generation, mechanical efficiency, load carrying capacity, film thickness, lubricant flow, and, in many cases, wear. The viscosity of oil is a measure of its fluid resistance to flow and is regarded as its internal or fluid friction. The degree of contamination can be an important determinant of viscosity and can adversely affect the lubricating properties of oil.

ONLY CLEAN OIL CAN PROPERLY PERFORM THESE FOUR VITAL FUNCTIONS!

All automotive and lubrication authorities agree that clean oil performs these functions better than dirty oil. That's the primary reason for filtering engine oil, to keep it clean!

TP Element Filter Media

Our TP Elements are a 2 ply 500 sheets per roll and they are very densely packed/rolled. Our core is twice the thickness of the average roll on the market. Ours has been made for us by a paper converter but if you check with some janitorial supply businesses, you may be able to find a close match. For optimal performance of the Frantz Filters, it is important to use an element that is recommended by the manufacturer.

Sheet size is not as important as actual roll dimensions. Roll length/height needs to be no more than 4.3", (end to end) other wise making it fit into the canister is not easy. Next important measurement is the diameter of the roll. You can always unwrap layers, but gluing it back on is not so good! Next is the core dimension. 1.5" is what the core used to be until it was changed to the current 1.625". Finally, the kind of roll is important. You do not want a quilted fluffy roll. It needs to be densely rolled/packed so that channeling does not occur. A fluffy roll will not filter the oil as well as a dense roll. Length is 4 1/4". Width is 4 1/4". Core Diameter is 1.5”

This Replacement Element is made to the Manufacturer’s specifications, to provide optimal performance for the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filters.

Service Instructions

Important: Check Oil Level after element has been changed.

Normal Operation: First element change should take place at 1,000 miles; successive element changes should be between 2,500 to 5,000 miles.

Very Dirty Engines: First element change should take place at 500 miles; successive element changes should be between 2,000 to 3,500 miles.

Cold Weather Operation: Change element every 2000 miles for best results.

New Car Warranty

Oil Fill Cap Modification

Step by step instructions on how to modify your Oil Fill Cap

for a By-Pass Filter Return.

Hi Deb;

I doubt that you remember me, but I'm the guy that sent you the photo's of the installation on a Chevy Duramax Diesel. Well, I've had my filter for some time now, and I am just tickled pink with it. I've put about 70k miles on the truck using your Dads filter.

I would also like to comment on my second Frantz oil filter that is used to filter the diesel fuel. It is absolutely amazing. GM has acknowledged that dirt in the diesel fuel is the biggest problem that they have had to deal with. They have upgraded their factory filter, and have even been forced to replace a huge numbers of costly fuel injectors. The 25 K pounds of rail pressure that is used on the new diesel engines simply will not tolerate even the smallest amount of impurities in the fuel. The factory fuel filter is VERY costly and should be replaced every 10k mi. I replaced the factory filter, and installed your filter in front of it at the same time. After 10K mi, I replaced the factory filter again. I cut open the removed filter, and it looked like new! Of course, I had replaced the roll of toilet paper in your filter 3 times in that 10K mi. Each time it was as black as coal, and full of debris. I let my next factory fuel filter go 30 K mi before I changed it. I cut the filter open... IT WAS CLEAN AS NEW! There is absolutely no doubt that your filter system does an amazing job filtering the diesel fuel, and a roll of toilet paper is sure cheaper than the $50 OEM filter. Good Job!

COMMON OIL QUESTIONS

DOES OIL WEAR OUT OR “BREAK DOWN?

No, oil does not wear out or break down! This fact has been substantiated by the U.S. Bureau of Standards, the Shell Oil Company and the U.S. Air Force.

WHY DO OIL COMPANIES RECOMMEND REGULAR OIL CHANGES IF OIL DOES NOT WEAR OUT?

They know oil becomes contaminated by using conventional full flow filters.

IS THERE SUBSTANTIAL PROOF THAT THE FRANTZ METHOD OF FILTRATION REMOVES CONTAMINATION, THEREBY MAKING OIL CHANGES UNNECESSARY?

Yes. Numerous independent laboratory tests have fully substantiated this.

WILL DETERGENT OIL BLEND WITH NON-DETERGENT OIL?

Yes, non-detergent oil is oil that has had no detergent added; therefore, there can be no harm in mixing these two oils.

SHOULD DETERGENT OR NON-DETERGENT OIL BE USED WITH THE FRANTZ OIL CLEANER/FILTERS?

The Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter performs equally as well with either.

NOTE: If non-detergent oil has been used prior to the installation of the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter on an older engine, it is advisable to continue using non-detergent oil.

CAN VARIOUS BRANDS OF OIL BE BLENDED TOGETHER?

Yes; however, major oil companies suggest that you stay with one brand of oil.

WHAT IS RE-REFINED OIL?

It is Oil that has been through a re-refining process.

WILL THE FRANTZ OIL CLEANER CLEAN HEAVY DUTY AND MULTI-VISCOSITY OILS?

Yes. Any motor oil can be kept "clean" when filtered through the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter and will continue to maintain ALL the lubricating qualities of NEW oil. While some oils may not appear GOLDEN "clear", they will prove analytically "CLEAN" when laboratory tested. Some oil company’s have compounded a new "ash-less" detergent into their premium oils which may turn the oil gray or black when in service.

WHY DO MULTI-VISCOSITY OILS (e.g., 10-30) TURN GRAY?

This is due to a combination of compounds adherent to this type of oil. The gray discoloration does not affect ANY of the lubricating qualities of the oil.

IN COLD CLIMATES, IT IS THE NORMAL PROCEDURE TO CHANGE OIL FROM 10 WEIGHTS IN THE WINTER TO 30 WEIGHTS IN THE SUMMER; HOW IS THIS DONE WITH A FRANTZ OIL CLEANER/FILTER?

This can be accomplished by not draining the oil; simply add the oil of the desired weight at each tissue change as the season changes. Example: If you add one quart of 40 weight oil two consecutive times to 10 weight oil, this will bring the oil viscosity very near to the weight desired. This gradual change of oil viscosity coincides with the seasonal change and is a definite advantage to the customer.

IS OIL EVER TOO DIRTY TO BE CLEANED WITH THE FRANTZ OIL CLEANER?

No; however, some car owners may prefer to start with clean oil when the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is installed.

WHAT PROCEDURE SHOULD BE FOLLOWED IF THE OIL DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CLEAR IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME?

A. PALM TEST. Oil may be "clean" but not "clear”. To determine if oil is clean, place a drop of it in the palm of your hand and spread evenly with your finger. Clean oil, even though not clear, will show no trace of black carbon; just a thin film of clean oil.

B. PROPER INSTALLATION. If filter is hot, it is apparent that the oil IS going through the unit. When you remove the Cylinder Kit, take note of how the "waffle pattern” (Screen Imprint) is very definite on the bottom of the tissue cartridge; this indicates sufficient oil pressure. Then remove the tissue and note whether the top of the cartridge is compressed. If not, the oil return hose is not open. If there is a heavy sludge build-up on top of the tissue cartridge, the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is working perfectly and it is an indication that the engine is very dirty and additional mileage is needed to continue the cleaning process.

C. ENGINE OPERATING TEMPERATURE. No filter can do its best job with a cold engine. Proper operating temperature is very important to engine performance, especially in cold weather. Stop and go driving in cold climates may not allow an engine to operate at normal temperatures. Technically, engines in cold climate conditions should be equipped with a 180 degree thermostat, to insure a proper operating temperature is attained. A piece of cardboard may be placed in front of your vehicles radiator to raise the temperature of engines on short runs in cold climates.

D. WHAT HAPPENS WITH EXCESSIVE FUEL DILUTION? It causes the oil to darken. Check for faulty carburetion or faulty fuel pump diaphragm. This can be detected by removing the tissue roll and smelling for a heavy concentration of gasoline fumes. A blotter test of oil with excessive fuel dilution will appear a gray color with NO contamination separation, similar to blotter tests of “ash-less” detergent oils and 10-30 oils.

E. HOW CAN YOU DETERMIN IF ASHLESS DETERGENT OILS ARE CLEAN? Oil does not need to be “crystal clear" to be clean. A way to determine this is to perform one of two tests. The first is a “PALM TEST" and the second is the “BLOTTER TEST”. For a palm test, apply a couple of drops of oil to the palm of your hand from the end of your oil dipstick, rub it around and into your skin; if it all disappears and no residue is visible in your pours, this proves the cleanliness of your oil.

NOTE: When making a blotter test, if a drop of oil shows no contamination separation but remains the same color from the center to the outer edge of the drop, it is "clean” oil. Discoloration may be due to the type of detergents in the oil. Some detergents are known as ”ash-less" detergents which may turn dark in color when they come in contact with hot metal; however, a laboratory test will show the oil to be analytically clean.

OIL COLOR CHANGES

OIL TURNED GRAY:

This is caused by accumulation of lead salts in the oil. The tetra-ethyl lead anti-knock compound used in high octane gasoline is converted to insoluble lead salts during combustion. These lead salts have a light gray color, so it is very common that crankcase oils will develop a deep gray color in quite short mileages. These lead salts are harmless to the oil, and to the engine, as long as they don't accumulate in excessive amounts; an impossibility with the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter.

OIL TURNED BLACK:

This is caused by accumulation of combustion soot in the oil. Just a few tenths of a percent of the soot in the oil is enough to turn it coal black in color. Soot contamination of oil is a direct indication of poor combustion and excessively rich fuel-air mixtures.

OIL TURNED MILKY AND CLOUDY:

This is caused by accumulation of water in the oil. Water contamination of crankcase oil is always undesirable, since water is one of the chief causes of sludge formation.

OIL TURNED DEEP RED:

This is caused by the red dye used in many premium grades of high octane gasoline. Minute amounts of this dye, washing down into the crankcase oil, will often give the oil a deep red color. This dye contamination is entirely harmless.

CLEAN vs. CLEAR OIL

CLEAN OIL IS NOT NECESSARILY CLEAR

One of the most frequent questions or comments heard is “Why has my oil not cleaned up yet, when my Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter has been on now for almost 10,000 miles?” Almost without exception, the answer is obvious. The oil IS CLEAN. Either the customer or the distributor just does not KNOW that it is clean. The oil company’s have developed a detergent known as "ASHLESS DETERGENT". This detergent will turn "DARK" or even "BLACK" under normal engine operation within 100 miles and "REMAIN" black. It is the detergent that changes color and not the oil. THIS DETERGENT CANNOT BE REMOVED OR "CLEARED UP”. It will remain black as long as the detergent remains in the oil. As long as the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter is "PROPERLY INSTALLED" and "PROPERLY SERVICED” the oil is "CLEAN" after a normal period of time (usually 3,000 to 4,000 miles). The oil company’s have searched for years to come up with an oil that would give the service required to keep sludge deposits, etc., from forming in engines, and to keep the contamination in suspension to a higher degree. All of this is made necessary because of the constant tendency upon the part of the Auto Manufacturers to prolong the time between oil changes and to increase horsepower and cut the crankcase oil capacity. Oil is asked to do more and more and yet the amount of oil to do this job is being decreased.

The "ASH-LESS DETERGENT" is the oil company’s answer to these problems. We would like to help you keep your oil "CLEAN" as well as your vehicles engine. The oil companies developed this "ASHLESS DETERGENT" because of its superior ability to 'FLOAT' contamination. This means that ALL of the contamination will be kept in suspension in your engine. But it also means the contaminations will "CONSTANTLY BE WEARING ON YOUR ENGINE". The Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter will remove ALL OF the CONTAMINATION because the oil will be carrying the contamination to the OIL CLEANER/FILTER. In other words, the Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter doesn't just FILTER your oil, it CLEANS your oil. “Your ENGINE and your OIL will be kept CLEAN with your SUPERIOR OIL and our SUPERIOR OIL CLEANER/Filter."

I plan to get one of these but i will be doing a little different installation. I plan to return to the oil fill neck on the engine, i will have to weld a fitting in there.

Is that similar to putting it back in our Cummins oil fill cap? I really need to get a bracket fabbed up and get mine back on!

Great info Muddy! They really are a great filter. Anyone considering one, it isn't a mess at all to change and you won't find a better filter media out there. Even if you spend a lot more on the elements (The TP 'element' is unfairly priced at a whole lot cheaper than anything else out there!)

Thank you for continuing the manufacture of the FRANTZ Oil Filter. I first ordered one over thirty (30) years ago for my 1967 VW. I have had a FRANTZ Oil Filter in every automobile I have owned since then.

My interest in oil filtration began while I served as an Engine Cadet in the American Merchant Marine. The oil for turbine lubrication on the S.S. American Leader, C-2 freighter, my first ship, had not been changed in the ten (10) years the ship had been in service when I sailed on her. That interest continued through my four years in engineering school and during my fifteen years as an aerospace engineer and manager.

Oil does not wear out. Oil does become contaminated with water; and, in internal combustion engines it becomes contaminated with sulfates and sulfites from combustion by products. Such contaminates mix with water to form acids which attack engine parts, hence wear. On ship board such contaminants are removed by centrifuging the oil periodically. After centrifuging the oil, lost as sludge, is replaced by new oil. Centrifuging of lube oil in automobiles (and other similar relatively small engines) is not feasible due to both the high cost of and large size of centrifuge equipment.

This is where the FRANTZ Oil Filter comes in. Automobile engine wear is caused by water and acid resulting from combustion products. The FRANTZ unit removes the water by capillary action as the lube oil passes through the two-ply toilet paper roll in the FRANTZ bypass filter. My present automobile is a 1993 Ford Escort I purchased new in November 1993. The first thing I did upon purchasing the Ford was to install a FRANTZ Oil Filter in it. That vehicle has been driven by me 135,000 miles with no engine problems. I am still averaging 39 miles per gallon. This constant mileage average indicates the engine compression has not changed since I bought the automobile over nine years ago. Not only have I virtually eliminated the normal engine wear, I have saved a bundle of money each 3,000 miles when I would have replaced all of the engine lube oil. The only oil I now have to replace is the amount that is in the used toilet paper roll. Thus, for the price of a roll of toilet paper and slightly less than one quart of new oil each 3,000 mile service, I am giving my engine long life and saving money. Thank you WE FILTER IT!

Over the years, I have had a Frantz Oil Filter on most of my vehicles & even on a boat! When I returned from my LDS Mission in 1962, I owned a 1955 Chevy that was used for most of my mission. I could always tell the number miles on my motor oil, by the color & I had been faithful about changing my oil often. My Father was acquainted with a Distributor of Sky Corporation; the early manufacturer of the Frantz Filters. He sold my Father one of the Frantz Oil Cleaner. The first Frantz units were canisters that went into the old by-pass filters installed prior to the early 60's by the factories. Dad had not yet installed the unit on his car & offered it to me when I was changing my oil. At first, I was not receptive to the "Don't Change Your Oil, Clean Your Oil" concept. I finally accepted the filter, due to the inexpensive cost of each element change!

After changing the oil & installing that Frantz unit on my car, I made a trip from Southern California to Fresno, California to visit a sick Uncle; from there, I went on to Provo, Utah to attend college BYU. Soon after, I went to Idaho with a missionary companion. One day, I realized I had driven over 5000 miles since my last oil change. When checking the oil level, I was amazed to find that the oil still appeared clean & fresh. I concluded that there might actually be some truth to this Frantz Oil Cleaner; I replaced the TP Filter Element & have been a faithful user ever since!

In the early 70’s, I purchased a 1963 Pontiac Station Wagon for $125.00. Although it had a miss in the motor timing, I made the purchase with the intent of rebuilding the engine before using the car that much. One day I was inspecting the engine to determine the cause of the continuous misfire, and I found a bad nut on the valve adjustment. After replacing the nut, the miss was gone. I decided to use this car as is for the time being. When I got the chance to install a Frantz Oil Filter on this car, I decided to change the oil at the same time so that I would know what was in the engine. After running the engine for more than 30 minutes to make sure everything was warmed up & to insure there were no leaks, I checked the oil level. When I pulled the dip stick, the oil looked like it had NOT been changed. It was as black as before the oil change.

I proceeded to drive the car & after about 600 miles, I noticed the Frantz canister was cold after warming up the motor. I changed the TP Filter Element, added a quart of oil & continued to drive. When I had driven another 1000 miles, the filter was again cold & I made another change. When I had about 3500 miles on the oil & after 3 element changes, the oil had the appearance of new oil. Later, when I did rebuild the motor, there was no sludge anywhere to be found in the engine.

When I purchased my current 2003 Chevy 6.6 Duramax Diesel Pick-up Truck, I had assumed the Frantz Filters were no longer available; I had installed another Bypass Filtration system. Upon learning of the Frantz Filter come back, by We Filter It! Inc., of Nampa, Idaho, I removed the other system & installed a brand new model 2000 of the Frantz Filter!

Service & Maintenance

Service Interval

Change your first element at 500 miles. Thereafter, you should follow these guidelines below.

In Town Driving:

Change your TP Element every two months or 2000 miles.

Highway Driving:

Change your TP Element every four months or 5000 miles. If driving is a combination, change your TP Element every 3 months or 3000 miles.

Synthetic Oil:

Use of Synthetic Oils may increase these limits up to 50%.

Diesel Engines should decrease these limits by 25%.

Service Instructions

Always service your Frantz Oil Filter after your engine has been turned off for at least 1/2 hour. The steps to replace the TP Element are:

1. Remove the Clamp.

2. Pull off the Canister.

3. Remove the TP Element.

4. Replace with a clean new TP Element. TP must be 2 ply, 500 sheets per roll, for optimal performance.

5. Replace Canister.

6. Replace Clamp.

7. Top off your engine Oil Level:

(Usually a quart)

Two types of Clamps have been used on the Frantz Oil Filter. The newest has a black knob w/ a”T” bolt. The second & older version is an “over center” type. Either unscrew the black knob & lift off clamp or swing the safety ”D” clip out of the way, snap the clamp open and then lift off.

To remove the canister, rock back and forth a few times to release the vacuum. When off, use pull ring to remove old TP Element. Wipe canister with a clean rag. Replace pull ring into a new roll of TP Element & push it back into the canister. You may need to remove a couple wraps to get the TP Element into the canister; just be sure it is snug & not too tight or too loose. Push the TP Element in with the heels of your hands, & then push in further w/ a quart can if available. Wipe the base gasket clean of excess oil. Give the canister top one hard hit with your fist end & replace the clamp making sure that as it tightens, it pulls the canister flange toward the base evenly & together. If your clamp has the “D” clip, make sure you replace it, too. Also, be sure to inspect your HOSES often & replace when damage or wear is visible!

SERVICE INTERVAL

Change Element every 8,000 to 10,000 miles if engine operation remains satisfactory. The time between element changes will depend a good deal on the kind of fuel you are using. If you happen to purchase a particularly “bad” tank of fuel, your engine will tell you by the loss of RPM and power. (Convert hours to miles using one hour as 40 miles.)

To Change Element

Remove clamp and lift canister off base. Remove used element from canister by pulling on element remover. Remove pull ring from used roll (element remover) and replace in a new roll of 2 ply 500 sheets per roll toilet paper.

General Motors Diesels

Cut 3/8” steel tube upstream of factory filter, which is down stream from the fuel pump where the line pressure is about 9 lbs. per sq. in. Slip hose over steel tube and clamp in place; connect to Frantz Filter inlet. Install Frantz Filter outlet hose and take back to steel tube supplying factory fuel filter. Clamp all connections. To mount your Frantz Filter, use bolts and fender washers for plastic wheel fenders, but on GMC trucks, use sheet metal screws. Prime your Frantz Filter as directed In “Service Instructions.”

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Peugeot Engines

The Frantz Filter should be installed between the fuel tank and the “factory” fuel filter. Locate hose which connects the factory filter to steel tube coming from the tank, unclamp hose and pull off tube with a length of hose furnished with installation kit. Use whatever fittings you need at base of the Frantz Filter for proper altitude and direction. Connect the outlet from the Frantz Filter to the original hose which you disconnected from the steel tube. Do this with the splicer fitting and clamp both hoses. Prime the Frantz as Directed.

VW Rabbit

Factory fuel filter is located on passenger side of engine compartment. Filter inlet line is “crimped” onto a so-called “banjo” fitting. Using a hacksaw; cut this crimp so that the inlet line can be pulled off the banjo fitting. Pull the short length of inlet hose off the steel tube coming from the fuel tank. Now remove the two nuts holding the factory filter in place so that the filter can be set out of the way while you install the Frantz Filter. Mount the Frantz in the space forward in the engine compartment. On the Frantz Base, use

Installation of New Element

Place pull ring (element remover) through center of new tissue roll. Push TP element into canister with pull ring at the top. Replace retainer ring back inside rim of canister on top of TP Roll. Make sure TP is pushed down all the way. (1/4” lip)

Priming of New Element

Before replacing the canister onto the base, pour some clean fuel into new element until air bubbling stops. Fill base center tube full of fuel. Now replace the canister on the base and set firmly.

Clamp Replacement

Set canister firmly onto the base and give a hard blow to the top of it. Spread the clamp and place it so that V-inserts engage the base and canister flanges. Important: Be sure the clamp is properly aligned or it will be difficult to tighten clamp knob and bolt. Engage T-Head bolt into saddle and tighten black screw knob. (This can be done easily with fingers.) Start engine and check for leaks and for smooth running conditions.

Congratulations! You will now be running, possibly the cleanest fuel available through your engine for your next 8,000+ miles.

Walmart Owner Operator; Charlie Williams.

This vehicle is a 1999 Peterbilt Truck with a 3406E Model Cat Engine. It had 850,000 miles on it when two Full Size Frantz Oil Filters were installed in TANDEM. This vehicle has about 44 quarts of petroleum oil in its system and the oil used is Mystic Oil 15/50W manufactured by SITCO.

When Charlie installed his two Frantz Oil Filters, he used the 1/4” hose (200 PSI 300 degrees F.) provided with our complete units. After about 105,000 miles of use, he changed to Steel Braid Line for the supply & return lines due to the increased running temperature of the vehicle oil. His pressure feed comes from the placement of an Adapter Ring between the engine block and Factory Spin on Filter. His oil is returned into Oil Filler Cap. With the use of the two Frantz Oil Filters, there has been NO EFFECT IN THE OIL PRESSURE.

Charlie drives between 3,500 to 4,000 miles per week. He has changed the two Frantz Filter Elements and added two quarts of new oil to the system each week of use. Charlie changed his oil at a 105,000 mile interval and has now gone 120,000 miles on his current oil.

In the past, Charlie would spend an average of $140.00 to $180.00 every 10,000 miles to change his oil. In addition, his truck would be down 1 to 2 hours each time to be serviced.

Since Charlie has been using the Frantz Bypass Filtration System on his Truck, he has SAVED well over $1,500.00 in his last 220,000 miles driven. Once a week, Charlie has spent about fifteen minutes to change out the two Frantz Filter Elements and to add two quarts of new oil to the system.

Charlie has been VERY PLEASED with the results and savings of using the Frantz Oil Filters on his “Big Rig”! Charlie added a third Frantz Oil Filter to his truck last year and now he extended his element changes to once every 10,000 miles. At We Filter It!
