Housing Market

Recommended Posts

We all know the housing market has been real bad lately.

You figure real estate agents, contractors, etc are getting hit hard.

Well my Dad has been working at an OSB mill since 1983 and the first stage of layoffs happened last week. He was spared, but some of the guys had been with the company for close to 10 years.

They gathered up the WHOLE workforce and had a meeting. The people that were laid off had a few hrs to pack their locker and leave the property, police escort and all.

My Mom and Dad are worried what is next to come. More layoffs? Shut the plant down? I can't even imagine working at a place for 25 years and then tomorrow being told that's it... no more

Well I hope it don't come to that, it has been a slow couple yrs, but it should bound back up, nothing like it was... What killed people was the ARM loans, it should get back up and runnin' again, I've been in construction for quite a few yrs now and have seen alot, it won't hit like 2005-06 but it will get rollin I hope anyway.... Hope all goes well with dads job...

Hope your Dad will be alright. It's kind of a stressful time right now. I have 7 families depending of me staying busy. I'm sure it will pickup soon, but it definitly makes you think twice.

I was in the wood products industry for 17yrs and survived Jimmy Carter's "Stagflation" with two small kids and a big morgage and I remember the helpless feeling of being at someone elses mercy for your job,but you just have to remember that if you have your health, family and a positive attitude that you can get through almost anything.

I hope things work out OK for your folks.

I agree... It is a stressful time for anyone in the building industry... I know all my metal roofing product prices change damn near every three days... price increases have been hitting and people still want chit done for cheap... Fortunately I don't work for cheap... I may loose some jobs to joe schmoe that works out of his truck but for me to do a job right and have a happy custome at the end makes life happier... This winter work got really slow here... I ended up laying all my guys off.. The weather didn't help either we had about am month and a half of snowing blowing and rainging. So it sucks but as a whole it should come back maybe like Randy said not as strong but it will... Right now the custom housing is booming which I like because I can make more money off those and my customers doing custom houses just call me give me a game plan and let me do my thing...
